Connacht Senior Football Championship

Mayo 2-21 New York 2-6

MAYO made it past New York with 15 points to spare this afternoon despite conceding two goals in the second half.

The victors were never seriously in danger of losing but were still filleted at the back by New York on more than once on a day when the final score bore more resemblance to a hurling game.

Ryan O’Donoghue set a new record by scoring 1-13, the highest tally of any Mayo player against New York in the decades-long history of this fixture.

Mayo didn’t exactly hit the ground running, with both sides matching each other in the opening 15 minutes.

Inspired by O’Donoghue, Mayo began to purr from the seventh minute as three points from the Belmullet man and an Aidan O’Shea free put them 0-5 0-1 ahead.

Mayo’s only major wobbles of the first half occurred when New York’s Cillian Butler got one point from two attempts to lob Colm Reape after the Knockmore goalie ventured off his line.

O’Donoghue quickly responded with a goal and added five more points before the break to give Mayo a 1-11 to 0-2 lead.

The result was all but decided, but there was still plenty of bite in New York, who fought back when the impressive Frank O’Reilly shot a rocket of a goal in the 42nd minute.

It wasn’t the first or last time the Statesiders troubled the Mayo goal as Jamie Boyle repeated O’Reilly’s heroics with another green flag seven minutes later.

The locals now had something to shout about but never got within eleven points of Mayo.

The visitors extended their lead again when the lively Paul Towey won a penalty that was converted by substitute Cillian O'Connor.

Both Towey and Sam Callinan saw goal attempts blocked before Ryan O’Donoghue broke Conor Mortimer’s scoring record against New York with Mayo’s last point of the game.
