LADIES NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Mayo 2-8

Armagh 2-9

Despite an impressive second-half comeback, it was a bitterly disappointing defeat for the Mayo Ladies in Ballina on Sunday afternoon.

The victory for Armagh means that they have secured their place in the League final, whereas Mayo will have to wait until the final round to guarantee their Division One status.

Despite their valiant effort, the Green and Red women were unable to overcome the nation's current in-form squad.

The first half was played at a lightning-quick pace, with both teams showcasing their superb teamwork.

However, the two goals that Armagh scored in the 18th and the 28th minute were ultimately where the game was won.

Mayo captain Saoirse Lally did an excellent job on the league's top scorer Aimee Mackin, but anytime Mackin did get on the ball, she produced something special.

The teams went in at the interval with Armagh leading 2-5 to 0-2.

Mayo came out in the second half ready to play. They hit three points without reply, and when Sinead Walsh rattled the back of the net with 42 minutes played, the deficit was down to four points.

Armagh midfielder, Caroline O’Hanlon was shown a yellow card with ten minutes left on the clock. Mayo made great use of the extra player and substitute Saoirse Delaney raised the green flag in the 51st minute.

As the clock approached added time, the teams could not be separated until Armagh were awarded a free, which Aimee Mackin calmly slotted over, to bring the victory back to Armagh and guarantee the guests a place in the league final.
