Very Camogie League Division Division 4 Round 1
Tyrone 5-18 Mayo 0-13
MAYO’S opening league game of 2024 ended in a heavy defeat to an excellent Tyrone outfit on Sunday afternoon.
Mayo, who didn’t have a manager in place three weeks ago, were eight points adrift a half-time before the home side blasted in four goals in a dominant second half display.
Tyrone got on the score board first with points from Cara Little and Lara Devlin.
Column Ó Meara and Mary Kennedy’s Mayo then settled into the game and a great interception by Ava Dooley and Brona Joyce saw Mayo post their first point.
Both teams hit their share of wides before Becky Santos hit the back of the net for Tyrone just before half-time
Trailing 1-9 to 0-5 at the break, Mayo were first on the scoreboard when Lilian Keane converted a free.
Tyrone proved too strong for a young Mayo team that have eight minor girls on the squad, including three starters.
Despite getting seven different scorers, Mayo didn’t take their goal chances as Tyrone raised four more green flags through Lara Devlin, Roisin Mc Erlean, Cara Little and Lauren Fitzgerald.
Mayo’s next game is at home to Louth on Saturday, March 2.
