MARIA Walsh is set to be the only one of four Mayo candidates represented in the European Parliament as the marathon election for the Midlands North-West constituency enters its thirteenth count.

No candidate has yet been elected at the time of writing, but Ms Walsh looks almost certain to retain her seat in the five-seat constituency.

The Fine Gael MEP is currently third in the race for Europe with 76,491 votes, behind Independent poll-topper Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan (84,665) and party colleague Nina Carberry, who commanded an impressive 73,888 first-preference votes.

Trailing Ms Walsh is Fianna Fáil's Deputy Barry Cowen (75,594), whose party colleagues Senator Lisa Chambers (46,424) and Niall Blaney (31,850) are languishing in eighth and ninth place respectively.

With both Deputy Peadar Tóibín (Aontú), Michelle Gildernew (Sinn Féin) and Ciaran Mullooly (Independent Ireland) all battling for the final seat, Senator Chambers is highly unlikely win a seat in Europe.

The Mayo native initially lost out to Deputy Cowen in a selection convention but was subsequently added to the three-candidate Fianna Fáil ticket alongside Donegal's Senator Blaney. She is currently more than 15,000 votes off fifth-place candidate Ciaran Mullooly, who has 61,888 votes, more than 13,000 votes more than sixth-place Michelle Gildernew.

Independent Michelle Smith - one of four Mayo women in the European race - was eliminated after the eighth count after accumulating over 7,000 votes while former Green Party member Saoirse McHugh currently stands on 24,801 votes.

The Achill native currently has more votes than Herman Kelly (Irish Freedom Party) and the recently-eliminated Rory Hearne (Social Democracts) but less than Sinn Féin's Chris McManus and former presidential candidate Peter Casey (Independent)

The quota for Midlands North West 113,325. The election for the 15-county constituency is unlikely to be completed for a number of days.
