A second recount of the Swinford Local Electoral Area has commenced.

Every ballot cast in the election in the four-seat area is to be re-checked for errors after Sinn Féin candidate, John Sheahan, requested a second recount after he again finished one vote behind Cllr Neil Cruise in the race for the fourth and final seat.

The first recount found no difference in the total number of votes cast for Fianna Fáil councillor Adrian Forkan (1,668), Fianna Fáil councillor Cllr John Caulfield (1,642), Fine Gael councillor Neil Cruise (1,637) or John Sheahan.

Prior to the recounts, Cllr Gerry Murray was deemed elected after he surpassed the quota of 1,744 on the third count.
