A full recount of the Swinford Local Electoral Area has commenced.

A recount was ordered last night after just five votes separated Cllr Neil Cruise (Fine Gael), Cllr John Caulfield (Fianna Fáil) and Sinn Féin candidate John Sheahan (Sinn Féin).

Sitting Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray was the only candidate to be elected with any degree of comfort when he exceeded the quota of 1,744 on the third count.

Cllr Murray is not expected to be troubled by the recount, but a four-way battle between Cllr Adrian Forkan (Fianna Fáil), Mr Sheahan, Cllr Cruise and Cllr Caulfield is likely to once again emerge for the remaining three seats.

Cllrs Cruise, Caulfield, and Forkan were elected without reaching the quota before the recount was ordered by Mayo Returning Officer, John Condon.

Rather than a repeat of the count-by-count process, the recount will be concluded with one announcement that is expected to come later this evening (Monday)
