THE final two seats on Claremorris Local Electoral Area have been filled by Aontú's Paul Lawless and sitting Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke on the seventh count.
Cllrs Burke and Lawless were elected without reaching the quota of 1,954 after sitting Fine Gael councillor Tom Connolly was eliminated after receiving 1,536 votes, behind Cllr Lawless and Cllr Burke - who both finished on exactly 1,770 votes.
Cllr Lawless will be the first ever Aontú politician ever to sit on Mayo County Council. His election comes following unsuccessful runs for the 2019 local election and 2020 Seanad and Dáil elections.
The newly-elected councillors for the Claremorris Local Electoral Area are as follows: Cllr Alma Gallagher (Fine Gael), Cllr Michael Burke (Fine Gael), Cllr Damien Ryan (Fianna Fáil), Cllr Patsy O'Brien (Independent), Cllr Paul Lawless (Aontú).
