Westport-based councillor Fianna Fáil Brendan Mulroy launched his re-election campaign with a vow to continue to fight for the people of Westport and surrounds as he entered his sixth election campaign since he was first elected in 1999.
A large number of supporters, party members, town folk and elected representatives were in attendance at The Jester Bar in Westport when Mulroy’s campaign for re-election was launched.
Cllr Mulroy was first elected to Westport Town Council in his first election in 1999 and was re-elected by the people of Westport in the subsequent two local elections in 2004 and 2009.
Having served on Westport Town Council for 15 years, he was then elected for the first time to Mayo County Council in 2014 and was later re-elected in 2019.
John Geary was the MC at the launch and said that Brendan Mulroy had an excellent track record and had his finger on the ‘pulse’ of West Mayo and its people.
“Brendan is both impressive and personable. He is a candidate of high calibre who is not afraid to take on tough issues and face his opponents down when he needs to.
“Even in the past few weeks, Brendan has been raising important issues such as the lack of taxis servicing the country locations outside Westport at night – areas like Aughagower, Kilmeena, Louisburgh, Drummin and such outer lying areas. He has also taken a stance on not having election posters in the upcoming election and has highlighted the environmental benefit of not putting election posters up,” he said.
The launch was attended by Senators Niall Blaney and Lisa Chambers who are both Fianna Fáil candidates in the upcoming European elections for the Midlands–North-West constituency in June.
Senator Chambers spoke to the assembled crowd about how Brendan Mulroy is involved in so many voluntary groups and community initiatives.
“He has been a great contact point to assist those in need of support or advice – young and old and especially through his presence on Facebook and social media. Brendan Mulroy has stood up and is fighting the battle with the residents and homeowners at the pyrite-stricken Pairc na Coille Estate in Westport. He is not afraid to take on difficult issues,” she said.
Senator Blaney spoke about Brendan Mulroy being a very effective Mayo County Councillor who represents the West Mayo area with distinction. He said that he was delighted to be in Westport for his campaign launch and wished Brendan continued success at the polls.
In June 2018, Brendan Mulroy was elected by his fellow county councillors when he took up the highest accolade in local government politics by being chosen as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.
Minister for State at the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment, Dara Calleary TD said that during the Covid pandemic, Brendan Mulroy brought great leadership to the people of Mayo when he served as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.
“Brendan reached out to the people of Mayo and was a visible beacon as the first citizen of the county and offered real assistance and support to those who needed it. He had such a visible presence on the ground and across the county and provided leadership and courage to many.”
Minister Calleary singled out Cllr Mulroy as being a hugely effective voice for getting the Newport sewerage system upgraded and said he undertook a relentless campaign to highlight the ongoing pollution of Clew Bay at Newport .
“He put his neck on the line and kept immense pressure on Irish water and other agencies to ensure that Newport will be getting its long-overdue sewerage update.”
Councillor Mulroy said he is honoured to represent the Westport Electoral Area and he thanked the people of West Mayo for their continued support and faith in him. He remarked that if they placed that faith in him again come June 7, he would repay them with his continued committed dedication.
