The Helm at the Quay in Westport was buzzing with energy as a diverse crowd, spanning generations and political affiliations, gathered for the campaign launch for Fine Gael's Keira Keogh.
Attendees, including both seasoned political party members and first-time voters, packed the bar to capacity, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation and excitement.
The young businesswoman from the Quay is seeking to win a seat in the Westport Electoral Area in June's local elections, where she will have to unseat one of the current councillors, who are all seeking re-election. The sitting councillors are Peter Flynn (FG), Brendan Mulroy (FF), Christy Hyland (Ind) and John O'Malley (Ind).
The evening kicked off with traditional Irish music by the talented Des Cafferkey and friends; setting the stage for an evening of optimism. The crowd was then treated to beautiful Irish dancing by Kate and Honor Quinn, two very talented young dancers of just 9 and 7 years.
As the night unfolded, Deputy Alan Dillon, Deputy Michael Ring and MEP Maria Walsh delivered powerful speeches, inspiring the guests to get behind Keira in the run up to the June elections.
Deputy Dillon said: “It's great to see a new face, a new voice and a fresh perspective. The electorate would be well represented with Keira who is a fantastic candidate; compassionate, professional and dedicated.”
Deputy Ring thanked Keira for standing for election: “It takes courage to run and stand up for democracy at a time when it needs protecting most. Keira is a strong candidate with roots firmly in the area and we need her voice on the county council.”
MEP Walsh, who has known Keira for over a decade, added: “We are lucky to have a candidate with Keira’s capabilities and credentials on the ballot paper. I hope that the people of Mayo will have her vision and skill set on the council after the June election.”

First time candidate Keira took to the microphone and captivated the crowd with a passionate speech mentioning how so many are struggling right now in our ever changing world. She touched on the main concerns and struggles that people are facing in their daily lives from lack of childcare, to loneliness and isolation; challenges for local businesses with rents and rates, delays to services for the most vulnerable among us, and difficulties with housing and accommodation. She spoke about her readiness for the role of county councillor and how she feels her values including empathy, service to others and a hard work ethic, will ensure her effectiveness in delivering results, if elected.
In a bold move, Keira snatched the opportunity of the leap year custom to make a compelling proposal to the packed crowd - not for marriage, but for their support at the ballot box. With unwavering conviction, Keogh urged attendees to cast their votes in her favour on June 7, igniting a wave of enthusiasm and support from the crowd.
Keira thanked her running mate councillor Peter Flynn for his friendship and guidance and said if elected, she aspires to have his reputation for straight talking and authenticity.
Reflecting on the event, Keira Keogh expressed gratitude to her campaign team, family, Fine Gael members and all who came out. She promised to continue championing the causes that matter most to the community.
Also present at the event were Fine Gael candidates Alma Gallagher (Ballyhaunis) and Pat Chambers (Newport).
