‘He touched countless lives’ - Mayo teacher remembered fondly

Shane Freeman from Kiltimagh, who was a teacher in Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh, passed away in Mayo Hospice.

The communities of Kiltimagh and Louisburgh are in mourning following the passing of Shane Freeman earlier this week.

The beloved father of three passed away in Mayo Hospice with his wife, Orla, by his side, following a long battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 2, leaving behind a wide woven web of family, friends, and a community who cherished him.

Shane was beloved at Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh, where he was beloved by students and staff in his French and Business Studies classes.

The secondary school were quick to pay tribute to the teacher.

“Shane has touched the lives of countless students and staff through his teaching of French, Business Studies, and even Sign Language.

"His generosity, kindness, and dedication will never be forgotten.

“Shane fought a brave battle with cancer over the past six years, facing it with courage and dignity. His loss is felt deeply across our school community.”

His passions weren't confined to the halls of Sancta Maria, as Shane was a keen sportsman.

His soccer club, Kiltimagh/Knock United, also paid respects to their former player.

“Shane brought professionalism and great integrity, combined with fun and a competitive edge, to the club and the game. He played senior football and masters for the club before coaching at underage.

"Always supportive and encouraging the young players in training and games, Shane helped organise some fun blitzes, evenings of Lads v Dads, and a memorable trip to Sligo Rovers.

“He was a lifelong supporter of everything KK and regularly came to games and events.

“He left a great legacy in his wonderful family and great memories for all who played in his teams in the club.”

He was also regularly seen on the fairways at Ballyhaunis Golf Club.

“Many will remember Shane winning the vital match in Oughterard to seal our first and only Connacht Shield title, and also down the years winning many captains and Presidents' prizes," the club stated.

“Shane served the club the last few years as our Junior Convenor and spent many hours coaching the young boys and girls every summer. Shane also served with Golf Ireland as a selector on the Connacht Boys Under 18 team, and he took great pride in the achievements of John William and his own son, Ruairi.

“The fight and determination that Shane showed us all the last few years is a true testament to his character. He will be sorely missed around the fairways of Coolnaha.”

Shane is survived by his wife Orla, his children Ruairi, Darragh, and Eoghan; his parents, Margaret and Chris, and everyone who knew and loved him.

His remains will repose in O'Hora's Funeral Home in Kiltimagh on Friday, September 5, from 5.30pm to 8pm. His funeral will take place on Saturday, September 6, at 12 noon in the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh.

The funeral mass will be live-streamed on the Kiltimagh Parish website, which can be accessed here.
