Mayo University Hospital is asking anyone with flu-like symptoms not to visit the hospital.
Due to rising cases of flu in the community and hospital, anyone suffering respiratory symptoms, such as cough, sore throat, fever, runny or blocked nose, shortness of breath, fatigue, aches and pains, or gastrointestinal symptoms, is asked not to visit the hospital.
This comes following calls from Castlebar councillor Harry Barrett to the management of Mayo University Hospital to activate a surge plan now, as flu cases rise sharply across County Mayo.
MUH says if the public must attend the hospital, masks will be available at reception and should be worn when visiting patients.
Visitors are also asked to practice good hygiene, not use patient toilets on the wards, and clean their hands regularly with alcohol hand gel.
Mayo University Hospital says these measures are vital to avoid spreading the virus to patients, visitors, and hospital staff.
Additionally, MUH has said a maximum of two visitors per patient will be strictly enforced unless there is a pre-approved exception to this granted on compassionate grounds.
