Song and sorcery expected on stage this Halloween in popular Mayo venue

Roola Boola Children’s Arts Festival steams ahead at the Linenhall, with its juggernaut of events and activities for children and families. There is also a phenomenal theatrical performance and transformative writing workshop to consider experiencing, in November. 

Taylor Swift fans can unleash their inner Swiftie at two fun-filled ‘Swiftie Singalongs’ with Sligo singing sensation Sinéad Conway leading proceedings on Wednesday, October 29. Attendees will sing their hearts out and make new friends. There are two timeslots assigned, one for those aged 7 to 9 at 10.30am, and the 10 - 12 year old cohort at 12 noon. 

Continuing with the vocal theme, but with a movie and musical twist, is a special sing-a-long screening of rags-to-riches story, ‘The Greatest Showman’ on Friday, October 31. Warming up the show are members of Stageworld Performing Arts Castlebar, so expect a roaring chorus of cheers, clapping and singing. Fancy dress is also encouraged - come as ringmasters, acrobats, lions, tightrope walkers, or anything you dream up. 

Meet children’s book illustrator Alex MacNaughton and celebrate her gorgeous new picture book, ‘Dude. Be Nice.’ on November 1. Written by Sarah Scheerger, it hilariously follows Dude the bear, whose well‑intentioned “helpfulness” often causes more chaos than kindness - until his penguin pal Fizz helps him get it right. Enjoy a themed colouring sheet, write down three kind things you’ll do that week for display on the Linenhall’s kindness wall, and browse Castle Books festival stall. 

‘The Last Witch Bridget Cleary’ on November 11 explores the life and mysterious death of Bridget Cleary, an independent and spirited woman accused of being a changeling by her husband in 1895. A riveting production, penned and performed by Eve O’Mahoney, it examines historical gender roles, societal pressures, and the dangers of unfounded beliefs - issues still relevant today. Compelling for both theatre enthusiasts and those interested in cultural heritage, be transported to 19th-century Ireland, and witness the tragic consequences of myth and misunderstanding. 

Accomplished actress, writer, and producer, Eve O’Mahony’s dynamic career spans theatre and television, earning her acclaim for powerful performances, sharp storytelling, and dedication to historical and character-driven narratives. 

From November 4, a new opportunity to participate in popular workshop series, ‘The Write Hours with Alice Kinsella’ awaits, in the form of weekly two hour sessions, over a six week timeframe. With Mayo native, poet and author Kinsella steering the group, it is designed for writers of all stages, keen to set aside time to write and receive feedback, in a nurturing environment.
