Eoghan Lavin beat Liam Walsh to claim the BUI Celtic Middleweight title at the Queensberry Promotions Saint Patricks Day Weekend event in the 3 Arena, Dublin
Mayo's young, unbeaten unboxing star Eoghan Lavin continued his upward trajectory in the middleweight division when he secured a win in knockout style to claim the BUI Celtic Middleweight Championship over the weekend.
The Swinford star emerged from an absolute war in the capital as part of Queensbury Promotions' St Patrick’s Day Weekend event on Saturday night.
Coming into the major event on the back of a TKO win against Latvian Kristaps Zulgis, there was a sense that someone's O had to go when unbeaten duo Lavin and Walsh came toe-to-toe.
The Kerry man, nicknamed 'The Kingdom Kid', went into the Saturday showdown unbeaten in nine bouts, with four wins by way of knockout.
The 3 Arena stage was set for what promised to be a tantalising showdown between two of the brightest prospects in the division nationally, and it's safe to say the event delivered on its promise.
On a stacked card, this joust was one which captured the attention of the great and good of the sport who were in attendance.
Lavin didn't have it all his own way, as evidenced by the cut inflicted over his left eye as both men put on a show.
However, when the Mayo man needed to step up in the final round, he delivered.
With just under two minutes to go until the final bell, Lavin stepped up with the big right hook to put his opponent on the ropes, before unleashing a flurry of punches to send him to the canvas.
Referee Emile Tiedt was left with no choice but to call it, marking a huge victory in the career of a promising fighter for whom the sky could be the limit.
You can watch the moment which swung the fight here:
While the belt may have been draped around Lavin's waist by the close of business, the man signed to Frank Warren's promotion was critical of his application of the game plan set out by his coach, and former WBA lightweight champion, Anthony Crolla.
"It wasn't the performance I promised, and I apologise to everybody for that. It wasn't the performance that I was showing in the gym that I was ready to put on.
"I had an amazing team around me, a brilliant coach. Everything he told me tonight was there. I wasn't carrying it all out properly like I should have been.
"We knocked out a tough prospect who was coming to win everything. He was fighting for his dream there tonight, and I could see that in his eyes.
Lavin also gave a mention to the travelling support from his home county.
"There was a big crowd up with me. I can go back to see them all now and give my family a hug."
