On average, Belmullet had 115.9 hours of monthly sunshine.
Ireland may be famous for its green landscapes and rugged coastlines, but new research shows that some parts of the country spend far more time under cloud than others and one of those areas is in Mayo.
By analysing Met Éireann's sunshine data across 2025, Buckley Electrical can reveal that Ireland’s least sunniest location is Belmullet in North Mayo.
According to Kieran Buckley, Founder of Buckley Electrical, the findings highlight just how much Ireland’s sunshine levels can vary depending on location, and why perceptions around daylight don’t always match reality.
Sunshine data for this analysis was sourced from Met Éireann’s Monthly Climate Statements for January to December 2025. Locations were compared based on both average monthly sunshine across the year and how frequently they recorded the lowest monthly sunshine totals.
Valentia in County Kerry may be the least sunny on average, but Belmullet is equally the dullest place in the country in terms of frequency, Kieran says. “What’s interesting is that even in these locations, there’s still consistent daylight every single month, which has big implications when it comes to solar power.”
