Fire Service in Achill are tackling a gorse fire near Polranny

Members of the Mayo Fire Service in Achill are currently battling a gorse fire in a bog in the townland of Polranny.

The gorse fire which appears to have started by the side of the R319 in Polranny was reported shortly after 9am this morning and quickly spread across the bog. Crew members of the Achill unit of the Mayo Fire Service attended the scene and are currently bringing the fire under control.

With temperatures expected to rise, the Fire Service in Mayo are expected to be vigilent for gorse fires over the coming days. A number of fires took place across the county at the start of the month which resulted in hundreds of acres of land being destroyed and wildlife killed.

One of the biggest fires was in the Wild Nephin National Park in Ballycroy which also caused structural damage to the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail. The National Parks and Wildlife Service suspected that the fires in the national park were intentionally started and warned the prosecutions will follow for anyone who starts a fire.
