Funding is now available for conservation and regeneration projects in Ballina under the Historic Towns Initiative 2026
Property owners and community groups in Ballina are being invited to apply for funding under a new architectural conservation scheme aimed at revitalising historic parts of the town.
The Historic Towns Initiative (HTI) 2026 will provide grants ranging from €2,500 to €50,000 to support conservation and regeneration projects, with a particular focus on the Pearse Street Architectural Conservation Area, as well as Bury Street and McDermott Street.
The scheme is designed to encourage the restoration of historic buildings, tackle dereliction and vacancy, and promote sustainable development in line with national and European policies.
Projects eligible for funding include conservation-led repairs to historic structures, works that improve energy efficiency and carbon reduction, and initiatives that enhance the public realm and support inclusive placemaking.
Applicants are required to submit a detailed method statement prepared by a qualified conservation professional, outlining how the proposed works will be carried out.

Funding under the scheme can cover up to 80% of total project costs, including support from other public bodies.
The initiative also aligns with broader policy objectives such as the Town Centre First approach, climate adaptation strategies, and the principles of the New European Bauhaus.
Applications must be submitted by 5pm on Friday, April 24, with successful applicants due to be notified in May.
Local officials say the scheme presents a valuable opportunity to preserve Ballina’s architectural heritage while supporting economic activity and community development.
The funding is expected to play a key role in enhancing the character of the town centre and encouraging the reuse of vacant and underutilised buildings.
