DRINK driving arrests were down in Mayo last week with just six people being arrested for the offence throughout the county during the week The figure represents a significant reduction in the number of arrests for the preceding weeks when 27 people were arrested over a 14 day period.
The decline was welcomed by gardai and road safety organisations as evidence that there is a growing awareness of the problem. ‘’It’s still six too many but it is a step in the right direction. People have to be aware that there is no place in society for those who drink and drive and we have to get that message across,’’ said a Garda spokesman.
Meanwhile, the number of accidents involving cars was also down last week with 13 cars receiving material damage following collisions and five people receiving minor injuries. However, it was not all positive news on the roads of the county and a 20 year old man was seriously injured when the car he was driving hit a wall, overturned and landed in a field near Ballyheane on Friday afternoon last. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
