Former minister Michael Ring has called for ‘no more lockdowns’ in Ireland as Covid cases rise.
The Mayo TD made the call after restrictions came in last week forcing bars, late bars and night clubs to close at midnight.
“We are going to have to live with Covid now. We can’t go back to lockdowns,” he told The Mayo News.
“The level we are at currently is acceptable to me. Businesses have to live and I don’t think it is right forcing places to close at midnight. Businesses will not survive if they’re not let operate.
“We’re two years in now and we have to learn to live with it. People will have to make decisions for themselves in terms of what they feel they should or should not do, it cannot be the Government making blanket decisions for everyone,” he said.
Deputy Ring said he has received a lot of queries from constituents eager to have children home from overseas for Christmas.
“There are a lot of people who have not been able to come home since 2019 and want to come home to see their parents this Christmas. More restrictions are the last thing we want. People need to take responsibility,” he said.
He was also critical of how some non-Covid health matters have been delayed.
“The HSE have a lot to answer for with regards to how they are running the health service. I have received a lot of representations for people who require surgery and the surgery keeps being cancelled because of Covid.
“We have to be careful and not put everything second to Covid,” he said.
