Swinford continues to top Mayo Covid figures

THE Swinford Electoral Area has the highest concentration of Covid-19 cases in Mayo, according to the latest electoral area figures.
For the two week period from August 24 to September 6, Swinford Electoral Area had 136 confirmed cases of Covid-19, a rate per 100,000 population of 786.8. Swinford Electoral Area has a total population of 17,286.
That’s above the national average per 100,000 of 450.9.
Swinford Electoral Area also includes the towns of Foxford, Charlestown and Kiltimagh.
Other areas in Mayo above the national average include Claremorris, Ballina and Belmullet electoral areas.
Claremorris Electoral Area had 157 cases in that same timeframe. With a population of 27,141, this equates to a rate per 100,000 of 578.5.
Claremorris also includes the towns of Ballinrobe and Ballyhaunis.
Ballina Electoral Area had 128 confirmed cases. With a population of 25,110, that means a rate per 100,000 of 509.8. Ballina includes Crossmolina, Ballycastle and other outlying areas.
Belmullet Electoral Area had 58 cases. While these numbers are relatively low, with a population of 12,600, this equates to a rate per 100,000 of 460.3, just above the national average.
Belmullet Electoral Area includes all of Erris, Mulranny and all of Achill.
Castlebar Electoral Area has the lowest rate per 100,000 in the county with 360.1. There were a total of 108 cases among its population of 29,992, the highest populated electoral area in the county.
Westport Electoral Area is second lowest, with a rate of 424.4, with 78 cases among its population of 18,378. Westport also includes the towns of Newport and Louisburgh.
The highest rate per electoral area in Connacht is Manorhamilton in Leitrim, with a rate per 100,000 of 1,118.2.
