Hollywood looks set to arrive in Achill later this year with the filming of a new Martin McDonagh movie starring Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell.
Oscar-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh is reuniting with actors Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell for his new film ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’. The filming of the movie is due to begin in August and while the majority of it will be filmed in Galway, speculation is growing that some of the scenes will be shot on location in Achill.
In recent weeks members of the film’s production team working on site location visited various locations on the island which they intend to use in the movie. It is understood that the Atlantic Drive is one location where they hope to film and it is understood that filming is expected to start in Achill in October.
The Banshees of Inisherin tells the story of a pair of lifelong friends on a remote Irish island who find themselves at an awkward time in their relationship when one of them no longer wants to be friends.
The movie has been over 25 years in the making and was originally supposed to be the third instalment in a series of plays McDonagh dubbed the ‘Aran Island Trilogy’, which began with The Cripple of Inishmann and was followed years later by The Lieutenant of Inishmor.
The filming of The Banshees of Inisherin will see McDonagh team up once again with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell having worked with the Irish actors on the 2008 black comedy crime film ‘In Bruges’.
In Bruges was McDonagh’s first feature film and it was nominated for a number of awards including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture and both Gleeson and Farrell were nominated for the Best Actor in a Comedy award which Farrell won.
London-born McDonagh is the son of a Sligo mother and Connemara father and he won an Academy Award for the short film Six Shooter in 2006 and in recent years picked up a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay in the 2017 film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
If the filming goes ahead in Achill it is expected to create a lot of excitement on the island and will also be an economic boost to the island during a quiet period of the year.
