Mayo Pride’s parade cancelled

Covid rains on parade, but other Mayo Pride events going ahead

This Saturday’s Mayo Pride parade in Westport has been cancelled. Although recently given the go-ahead by authorities, the organisers have now been told that the march is not possible for public-health reasons. All other Pride events that have been organised around the parade can go ahead, however.
A statement from Mayo Pride reads: “Despite stringent event planning and liaising with the local authorities, the Gardaí advised today that the parade cannot go ahead as previously approved and planned. All other small gatherings such as our outdoor drag dinners, cycles, hikes and yoga will still be taking place.
“We understand that this is extremely disappointing for many of you planning to march on Saturday. The importance of LGBTQ+ visibility and representation in Mayo is why we exist. That visibility when we celebrate Pride sends a powerful message to all members of our community.
“We have been overwhelmed with the support and positivity of the people and business community here in Westport and look forward to planning a bumper edition of Mayo Pride next year when it is safe to do so.”
In the run-up to Mayo Pride, businesses around the town – including Westport Garda Station and The Mayo News – have been flying the rainbow flag to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
The Mayo Pride committee is now encouraging anyone who was going to take part in the parade to wear their pride colours around town on Saturday and support the many local businesses flying the pride flag. I

MAYO Pride is now running a competition, inviting people to show them their most creative ways of celebrating Pride around Westport (in line with Government guidelines). Entrants will be in with a chance of winning a stay in The Wyatt Hotel right in the heart of town. To enter, tag @MayoPride on your socials, and Mayo Pride will choose a winner next week.
