Youths questioned after found with cannabis sweets

Easter also sees drugs raid in Achill, and violence in Ballina

THREE males under 18 years of age were questioned by gardaí after ‘jelly baby’-like sweets containing cannabis were found in a Westport apartment.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, was one of three discoveries of cannabis following searches by the Mayo Divisional Drug Taskforce in the west Mayo region last week.
The three male youths, who were all under 18, were questioned by gardaí in Westport after a quantity of cannabis sweets and herb worth €7,000 were found in the apartment.
An Garda Síochána also seized €600 following the search.
Cannabis sweets are confectionary, such as jellies and chocolate bars, that contains cannabis. Often targeted at teenagers, they are frequently disguised as normal branded sweets and have become popular in Ireland and the UK in the last year.
Elsewhere, a man in his 30s was arrested by gardaí in connection with the discovery of two cannabis plants and €12,000 worth of cannabis herb in a house in Achill. Members of the Mayo Divisional Drug Taskforce searched the house on Good Friday afternoon and discovered the drugs.
No one was arrested at the scene, but later on Friday night a man in his 30s was arrested by gardaí in Westport. He was released without charge, but a file is being prepared for the DPP.
On Saturday night, another man in his 30s was also arrested after €2,500 worth of cannabis herb was found in an apartment in Westport. He was also released without charge, and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
A garda spokesperson said the three incidents were not believed to be connected and thanked the public for their assistance.

Meanwhile, two men were hospitalised after they were assaulted in separate incidents in Ballina over the weekend.
The first incident took place late on Friday night when a man was assaulted in the Convent Hill area of the town. The incident took place at approximately 11pm and was reported to gardaí at 2am. A 21-year-old man claimed he was assaulted and brought to Mayo University Hospital and was later released following treatment for injuries.
The second assault took place in the Greenhills Estate at 11.45pm on Saturday when a 19 year old claimed he was assaulted by another male of the same age. The injured party was brought to Mayo University Hospital for injuries. A suspect was detained and questioned by gardaí in Ballina.
