A GARDA investigation is underway in Swinford following the death of a man after an altercation at his home last night.
The man, who is believed to be in his late 20s, was found dead by gardaí, who had been called to an incident at a property at Carrowbeg, located just off Main Street in Swinford, at approximately 11pm on Monday night.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and remains in Garda custody in Castlebar Garda Station. He can be held for up to 24 hours for questioning.
The body was removed from the scene at approximately 10.45pm and taken to Mayo University Hospital, where a postmortem is due to be carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Kathleen Han Suyin. While the cause of death has not yet been determined, it is believed that the victim may have suffered stab wounds during an altercation in the house.
The scene is currently being examined by Garda scenes-of-crime examiners and gardaí are currently working to determine what led to the suspected assault on the victim.
House-to-house enquiries are ongoing, and gardaí are also gathering CCTV footage from the area.
Gardaí are asking anyone who may have information or anyone who witnessed any unusual activity in Swinford between 8pm and 11.15pm on Monday night to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
