GARDAÍ investigating an allegation of rape in Charlestown on Saturday afternoon say they are ‘making good progress’ and following a ‘definite line of enquiry’.
The news of the incident shocked the east Mayo town after it emerged that the alleged victim is a 15 year old girl and the incident was reported to have occurred at a playground during the day.
The incident was reported to have taken place at a playground in the Lowpark area of Charlestown on Saturday and a forensic examination of the scene took place afterwards.
Gardaí launched a public appeal on Sunday for information and asked anyone who was in the vicinity of the Square and/or Lowpark areas of Charlestown between 2pm and 8pm, to contact Gardaí in Claremorris on 094 9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
Superintendent Joe McKenna, who is responsible for investigating major crime in the Mayo Division, told The Mayo News that gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.
“Gardaí are making good progress in the investigation and while no arrests have yet been made, we are following a definite line of enquiry. We wish to thank all the people who have come forward and helped us,” he said.
