IRISH county music star Derek Ryan will be performing live in Coolegrane, Foxford next Friday night, December 6, at the launch of the spectacular Coolegrane Christmas Lights charity display.
Kind-hearted brothers Kevin and Brendan Hughes have been organising and erecting the wide array of lights at their family home to raise money for various charities since 2006. Together they’ve raised over €30,000, with all proceeds from this year going towards the Mayo branch of the The National Council for the Blind.
Also performing on the night will be Pat’s County Road Show, local Castlebar singer Tomás Langan and Dave Howley, who will be singing his hit ‘The Lights of Coolegrane’.
A electrician by trade, Kevin Hughes has built and wired most of the 200-plus light pieces, of all shapes, sizes and colours, that will be planted around his home in Coolegrane for the next month.
“We always decorated the house with Christmas lights, but we first started collecting for charity back in 2006 when there was some work being done at our local church and they needed some money,” Kevin Hughes told The Mayo News. “After that then we decided to keep it going and continue to raise money for different charities because we enjoy giving back to the people in need. Everyone is welcome to come along to the launch on Friday night to start the Christmas. We’re advising people to arrive around 6.30pm, with the show starting at 7pm, to avoid any traffic congestion. Of course there’ll be light refreshments for everyone.”
The dazzling display of lights will be turned on from 4pm to midnight every day until January 6, with people able to visit and donate to the chosen charity at the donation box which will be situated at the front gate of the house for the next month.
The house is located just outside Foxford, heading for Swinford, turning right just after Callow for Bonniconlon. At the first crossroads, turn right for Coolegrane and it is located about half a mile down that road. It should be easy to spot!
