A MAN in his 80s has been arrested in connection to the shooting dead of a man in his 60s in Aghamore late last night (Tuesday).
The shooting took place outside a property in the townland of Coogue, located close to Aghamore in east Mayo, just before midnight last night. A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene and another man in his 80s was arrested and is currently currently being detained at Castlebar Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
News of the incident was met with shock locally, where both men were well known in the farming community.
It is understood that the victim and the arrested man were both known to each other and initial investigations suggest that the shooting may have been a tragic accident. It is understood that shots were discharged after the arrested man heard activity outside his property, and initial inquiries suggest that a number of warning shots were discharged.
Local councillor John Caulfield said the there was a sense of sadness in the community following news of the shooting.
“There is great shock in the community about what happened. The two men were well-known in farming circles and both well liked. From what I have heard this seems to have been a tragic accident and my heart goes out to all left behind,” he said.
