A WESTPORT woman who has named a cancerous lump on her breast is to shave off her hair before her treatment in order to raise money for Rock Rose House.
Margaret (Mags) Bourke from Knockranny in Westport was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and in a novel way to deal with the trauma of the diagnosis, she decided to give her lump a name, Frida.
“Recently, I discovered a lump and I named my lump Frida. You may laugh at this but humour is a great help in coping with these situations and with future treatment,” she explained.
On Friday, September 20, Mags has organised a fundraising event for Mayo Cancer Support at Rock Rose House in Castlebar where she will shave off her long hair before she begins her treatment. She has named the fundraising campaign, ‘Feck-off Frida’.
“I will lose my hair over time and I would like to get there before the treatment does so I have decided to shave my hair off on September 20 in The Clock Tavern, Westport. All donations are going to Rock Rose House, Castlebar and all monies to date have gone through a Go Fund Me/Feck-off Frida campaign on Facebook. So far, I have been overwhelmed by the generous response.”
Others who are confirmed to be appearing on the night are Michael Dever, Jonathan Kelly, Seamus Moran, and Megan O’Donnell, with more names to be confirmed at a later date.
Donations can be given on the night as Rock Rose House representatives will be present at the event, with doors open at 8pm. All are welcome.
Rock Rose House is a local cancer support centre, located at St Patrick’s Avenue, Castlebar which offers counselling, therapies and a safe place to go. They can be reached at 094 9038407.
