Three men appear in court following €500,000 cannabis haul

A CIRCUIT court judge has commented that the cultivation of €500,000 of cannabis was, in real terms, ‘peanuts’ in the drug trade.
Judge Rory McCabe made the comment after three Lithuanian nationals appeared before him at a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court.
The three men - Richardas Poskus, Victoras Vinciunas and Dimitris Bobrov - all of Drumagh, Killasser, Swinford - are charged with the cultivation of approximately €500,000 of cannabis in a grow house at the above address.
During a brief hearing, Mr Diarmuid Connolly, counsel for one of the defendants, applied for a senior counsel to be appointed to the case describing the charge as ‘serious and substantial’.
He said the amount of drugs involved was €500,000 and this was a very serious matter which needed the services of a senior counsel.
Similar applications were made on behalf of the other two defendants and Judge McCabe granted the application, but noted that in real terms €500,000 was ‘peanuts in the drug trade’.
The three defendants were remanded in custody to appear before the court on July 9 for mention.
