From artistic observations about the natural legacy of the Navajo Nation juxtaposed with contemporary pollution in vast Arizona to the spectacular County Mayo blowhole known as Poll na Seantainne, at Downpatrick Head (Ballycastle), winning awards, both national and European, has become a commonplace experience over the last decade for Westport photographer, Michael McLaughlin.
At this year’s Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association (IPPVA)  accolade, held at a ceremony in Dublin over the weekend, he was chosen as Press Photographer of the Year – not surprising when the quality, quirkiness and acuity of his lens is examined.
His four winning images from the press portfolio were ‘Wreath Laying’ on the anniversary of the R116 in Blacksod Bay; ‘Pizza To Go’ at the Battle of The Lake Kite Surfing Competition on Achill Island; ‘Pilgrim’ on the slopes of Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday; and ‘Riders to the Sea’, horse-racing on Doolough Strand, Erris.
These evocative photographs were whittled down from 998 award-winning images to 69 finalists across eight categories.
Speaking to The Mayo News last night, he said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won this award, the standard across all the genres is extremely high and the competition was extremely stiff this year. For my images to have been selected by judges in the industry for whom  I have great admiration for their work, it is a huge honour and endorsement. I also love getting any opportunity to showcase our fabulous and diverse county through the medium of photography and to be endorsed by my colleagues on top of that is an added bonus.”
Michael McLaughlin was also awarded second place in the landscape category.
The Irish Professional Photographer of the Year Awards is the flagship event of the IPPVA calendar. All IPPVA members are qualified, registered and insured professional photographers or videographers.
