New figures have revealed that at least 122 people with disabilities across Mayo are languishing on the county’s Social Housing scheme’s waiting list.
Rehab, Irelands’s largest independent charity for people with disabilities, says the Government is failing to ensure that the basic human rights of people with disabilities are met.
“These worrying figures show that people with disabilities continue to be treated like second-class citizens,” said Rehab’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Kathleen O’Meara.
“Ireland needs to get to grips with how we support people with disabilities to live in their own homes. These figures show that the Government is failing our most vulnerable members of society,” added Ms O’Meara.
According to the charity, the Government’s delay in taking responsibility for funding of appropriate housing, demonstrates that people with disabilities are not a priority in the country.
