REGISTRATION for this year’s Achill Half-Marathon and 10k race event is now open and the committee advises interested parties to sign up early as the 2017 event has been capped at only 600 entrants for the half marathon and 400 for the 10k race.
This year marks the twelfth Achill Half-Marathon and also includes a 10k Race. The Achill Half Marathon event has become a spectacular highlight on the Achill calendar since its inception in 2006 when 300 runners entered the first race. The Half Marathon starts at 10.30am with the 10k race starting 45 minutes later at 11.15am on Saturday, July 1 at Keel Sandybanks. The registration headquarters at Keel Sandybanks will be open from 2pm on Friday, June 30 or from 7am to 9am on the day of the race.
The Achill Half Marathon is proud to be supporting the Irish Coast Guard and this event will also remember the Crew of Rescue 116. Chairman Pauric Corrigan from the committee said: “This is a great cause that provides support services to individuals and families, in both search, rescue and medical evacuations, which both visitors along with Achill residents rely on as an island community surrounded by the Wild Atlantic Way.
“Achill has a strong tradition of supporting the Irish Coast Guard and the team at Achill Half Marathon and 10k are delighted to be supporting the Irish CoastGuard.”
Cora Staunton from Mayo Ladies GAA added: “I am delighted to launch the Achill Half Marathon and 10k races and support this established event. This race event is a must for all road race enthusiasts.”
Barry O’Donnell, Manager of Sweeney’s SuperValu, Achill, stated that they are delighted to be the main sponsor of the Achill Half Marathon.
“As a competitor this is the event that I look forward to most every year. With its superb scenery, fantastic support from locals and its challenging ascents, the Achill Half Marathon and 10K is a must for every Half Marathon and 10k enthusiast.”
