AS the debate continues over the future of the Castlebar campus of GMIT (Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology), a spokesperson has said that there are ‘no plans to close the Mayo Campus’.
In a detailed statement, it was confirmed that the Mayo campus was ‘a valued’ and ‘integral’ part of the institute and ‘its reputation as a quality provider of higher education programmes will not be diminished’.
“The Higher Education Authority (HEA), the GMIT Governing Body, President, Executive Board and Management Group of GMIT are committed to the sustainable development of the Mayo Campus and to its students, staff and stakeholders,” the statement read.
While recognising difficulties arising from changing student demand, the Governing Body noted at a recent meeting that the approved academic plan ‘reflects growth of registered student numbers’.
“CAO applications for courses in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, applied social care, and some business courses increased this year on last; others maintained numbers while some courses saw application numbers fall,” the spokesperson continued.
At a recent public meeting organised by the Save Mayo GMIT group, attendees were told that the Mayo campus was due to lose five courses for the next academic year and that GMIT was running at a €2 million deficit. They also heard that there was a leak in the roof which precluded the use of certain classrooms.
However, the institute’s spokesperson since confirmed: “GMIT has made a detailed submission to the HEA seeking capital funding over the next decade, including repairs to the roof and existing external fabric of the Mayo campus building, parts of which date back to the 1840s, and further renovation, upgrade and improvement of the internal campus. GMIT is also completing the masterplan for all campuses which provides for the refurbishment of existing buildings at the Mayo Campus as student numbers grow to sufficient scale.”
It is also seeking ring-fenced funding to support the Cstlebar campus.
