Botched robbery on Greenway

A WOMAN was left shaken after a botched robbery attempt while walking on Westport’s Greenway on Thursday morning last, The Mayo News can confirm. Reportedly, the young mother had just dropped her children off to school and was walking along the Greenway, near the Westlands entrance, when she was approached by a young man who demanded money from her.
Fortunately, another woman came on the scene but the assailant escaped. Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and are looking for any witnesses to come forward.
Speaking about the incident, Independent Cllr Christy Hyland said ‘while such incidents are most unusual on the town’s Greenway, this attack causes concern’.
“I have concerns about this type of behaviour in our town and I am therefore happy that the much-awaited second phase of the CCTV system will be launched at the Garda Station tomorrow,” [Wednesday] Cllr Hyland said.
He confirmed that the locations of the new cameras have yet to be decided upon but he hoped there would be surveillance on the Greenway.
Meanwhile, a coach at Eagles Boxing Club, The Quay, Westport, has reported the theft of a ‘No Parking’ sign from the club’s perimeter wall. The theft is believed to have occurred on the night of Thursday, May 19 last.
