Newport road-crash victim identified

Newport road-crash victim identified

Postmortem to take place this afternoon at MGH

Anton McNulty

The identity of the person who died in a horrific road-traffic accident near Newport over the weekend has been confirmed as Mark McKenna, who had recently moved to Westport.
Mr McKenna, who was in his early 30s and originally from Dublin, died in the early hours of last Saturday morning after the Saab car he was driving left the road and burst into flames. The accident occurred at approximately 1.30am on Saturday morning at Cartoon, Newport on the main Newport to Castlebar road, close to Cuilmore NS.
It is understood that Mr McKenna had moved to The Quay area of Westport in the past two weeks. He was positively identified using DNA analysis.
The car overturned following the crash, ending up in a ditch. It was completely destroyed in the blaze, despite efforts from locals and emergency service to extinguish the fire. Gardaí had difficulty identifying the remains of the driver, as the car was not registered in his name.
A postmortem of Mr McKenna’s remains are due to take place today (Wednesday) in Mayo General Hospital.
Gardaí believe that Mr McKenna was travelling in the direction of Newport when the accident occurred, and they are currently investigating how the car lost control and ignited following the crash.
