Castlebar man blocked chase in Tesco

A GARDA was obstructed from chasing an escaped psychiatric patient through the aisles of Tesco by a member of the public, Castlebar District Court heard last week.
On January 29 last, gardaí received a report at 4.10pm of a person who had absconded from the Adult Mental Health Unit at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar and was observed in Tesco. Garda Fergal O’Gara explained that when he got to Tesco, the escaped male ran down the aisles of the supermarket in an attempt to escape.
As he chased the escaped mental health patient through the Tesco aisles, Garda O’Gara explained that on two occasions he was obstructed from pursuing the male by Kevin Cashin of 9 Rathbawn Grove, Castlebar.
Garda O’Gara told Judge Mary Devins that it was incredible the amount of times the gardaí were called to assist in the capture of people who have escaped from the Adult Mental Health Unit.
Mr Cashin was not present in court and Judge Devins stated that Mr Cashin could only be guilty if he obstructed Garda O’Gara in the execution of his duties and queried if this included chasing a patient up and down an aisle of a supermarket.
Superintendent Pat Diskin said he believed it came under the Mental Health Act but Judge Devins replied she wanted to see the law and adjourned the case until July 16 for mention.
