SINN Féin has confirmed that its annual Ard Fhéis will take place in the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar on the weekend of April 13.
The Ard Fhéis will be worth a potential €1 million to the Castlebar economy, with up to 3,000 delegates from all over Ireland along with International guests expected to attend.
The party ratified its decision at an Ard Chomhairle meeting in Dublin over the weekend. This will be the party’s first Ard Fhéis in Connacht, and it is believed to be the first Ard Fhéis of any party to take place in Mayo.
Commenting on the decision, Belmullet-based councillor Rose Conway-Walsh said she is very excited that the Ard Fhéis will be coming to Mayo. “We are delighted to confirm that the Sinn Féin Ard Fhéis will be coming to Castlebar. It will be worth a potential €1 million to the local economy. We will also try to source as many support services locally. The dinner, hosted by Gerry Adams, will take place in the Welcome Inn Hotel.
“As well as the delegates, as usual we will have a number of international guests. Normally they are from the ANC in South Africa, the Basque Country, the US and Britain. We also hope that while they are in Mayo, some of the delegates will stay in the area for a few days afterwards,” she said.
Last year’s Sinn Féin Ard Fhéis took place in Killarney, and Cllr Conway-Walsh said it helped increase membership of the party in Kerry. She hopes there will be a similar interest in Mayo.
