ACHILL County Councillor, Micheál McNamara has called for ‘a full report into the closure of the island’s bridge’ yesterday morning due to a fault in its operational system.
He raised the issue before scheduled business started at the county council’s monthly meeting at Áras an Chontae, in Castlebar yesterday afternoon.
“It is unacceptable that people were left cut-off because this new bridge was not working and I want a full report on its operations,” Cllr McNamara said.
He was joined  by Sinn Fein’s Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh who also criticised the local authority. Cllr Conway-Walsh said ‘what happened today was very disturbing’.
The bridge was closed from 10.15 until around 11am yesterday morning, causing a one-and-a-half mile tailback on the mainland side.
Apologising, Peter Hynes, the County Manager, said the closure was ‘regrettable and not acceptable’.
“We will endeavour to sort out whatever glitches there are.”
