MINISTER of State Michael Ring performed the official opening of the new Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool Complex at D’Alton Street, Claremorris on Saturday. The venture was completed at a cost €7 million and opened its doors to the public on September 1, 2009.
The Minister lauded the dedicated team of volunteers behind the venture and all who had worked so hard to promote the swimming club in Claremorris for more than four decades. He said Claremorris was a brilliant town that went about its business without looking over its shoulders at others.
“This is yet another very special occasion for the town and community. I must salute Claremorris and the great people who get out there and make things happen. There is still a lot of positivity out there. Let us encourage and support the positive,” he said.
Mayo County Manager Peter Hynes lauded the Claremorris community for their self-help approach which was a shining beacon in the success of the town. He said Mayo County Council had invested in the region of €50 million in the Claremorris region over the past 16 years, starting off with the by-pass (€16m) right up to the Swimming Pool and centre (€7m).
Msgr John O’Boyle, chairperson of the Board of Management of the Centre and a central player in the history of swimming in Claremorris, recalled the history of the pool in the town. He paid a wholesome tribute to the Management Committees and to many people who gave such outstanding service over the decades.
