Biggest Loser winner set for Westport adventure race
THE winner of of ITV’s ‘Biggest Loser’ weight loss competition Kevin McLernon is set to take the pinnacle challenge and compete in one of Ireland’s leading Adventure Races - Westport’s Sea2Summit on Saturday, November 3.
Weighing-in at 32 stone and 2lbs, Kevin started the programme as the heaviest man ever to enter the competition. Twenty-four weeks later Kevin went on to lose 40 per cent of his starting weight, with a final weigh in of 19 stone 4lb, a 12 stone 12lb loss, more stones and pounds than any other contestant ever in the UK.
Up to 1500 thrill-seeking sports enthusiasts will join Kevin to compete in the 2012 ‘Westport Sea2Summit’ set amidst the breathtaking scenery of Croagh Patrick and the backdrop of Clew Bay. Voted fourth Best Adventure Race in Ireland 2011, the pinnacle quest pushes participant’s limits to the extreme with a mix of road running, cycling and mountain hiking with a choice of two race options – Spirit (27.5km) or Supreme (56.5km).
Having turned his life around and adopted the motto ‘I Can, You Can’, Kevin now views Westport Sea2Summit as the next challenge in maintaining his new lifestyle. Speaking of the imminent Adventure Race, Kevin McLernon commented “11 months ago I was over 32 stone and barely able to walk without breaking out into a sweat and getting out of breath. Now here I am 15 stone lighter and training for Westport Sea 2 Summit. I’m living proof that if you take action and take the steps needed, anyone can change their lives in a massive way. I’ve still got weight to lose but the challenge of Westport Sea 2 Summit is keeping me well on track, I can’t wait for November 3,” he said.
Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin has been chosen as the designated charity for the 2012 event, with a percentage of each race entry going directly to supporting the vital services of the hospital. Participants are also encouraged to raise funds through sponsorship opportunities for Ireland’s largest paediatric hospital.
Speaking eagerly of the 2012 event, Westport Sea2Summit Race Director Paul O’ Brien explained: “Both the 2010 and 2011 event exceeded expectations and with race entry up on this time last year we are confident 2012 will also be a sell-out event. The course incorporates the Western landscape beginning with an on road run taking participants to the new Greenway route, followed by an 8K cycle to the foot of Croagh Patrick. The challenging mountain hike is intersected with a cycle completed by a brief obstacle course & finishing with the Greenway Run”
As the last Adventure Race of the season, a post race bash is planned including a celebratory prize giving ceremony for participants, their family and friends at the bustling resort and race HQ of the Westport Plaza and Castlecourt Hotel Resort. Race entry also includes a hot buffet meal plus a live band for only €59. 2010 and 2011 were both sell-out events so sign up soon as places are filling up.
