Huge crowds flocked to the streets of Castlebar last Saturday for the second Heart of Castlebar Shopping Festival while thousands thronged Linenhall, Tucker and Newantrim Streets on Saturday night for the inaugural on-street music festival.
Co-ordinator of the music festival Mick Baynes told The Mayo News that upwards of 3,000 people were there for the music festival which was a huge success.
“The night was an absolutely outstanding success and it goes to show what can be done when the community pull together. So many people were delighted with how it was a real family affair and people really enjoyed themselves.
“Thankfully there were no incidents for Gardaí and they told me that there was in the region of roughly 3,000 people there at one stage in the night. The bands that played were out of this world, the dancing was second to none and the carnival atmosphere was brilliant to see,” he said.
Local bands like Struck, Stone Cold Sober, Every Day Solution and What The Funk played while there was plenty of Irish dancing from some fine exponents of the discipline.
Circus acts and old-style carnival games added to the family atmosphere on the night.
The pubs on the three streets all actively supported the festival and Mick Baynes said they were rewarded for that with all of them ‘hopping’ on the night. He said that talk was already turning to next year with some people expressing the wish that it become a two-day festival. Mr Baynes stressed though that it was important that they didn’t over-stretch themselves, that concentrating on building up a successful brand was vital.
He said there was already talk too of a Christmas market-type festival this winter.
