MAJOR damage to the dunes on one of Mayo’s most popular and scenic beaches, Bertra, near the village of Murrisk, has led Mayo County Council to commission a study to examine its future conservation.
A local authority Senior Engineer, Padraic Walsh, told The Mayo News last week that ‘a storm earlier in the New Year did quite a bit of damage to the beach’, which lies at the base of holy mountain, Croagh Patrick.
“We knew we would have to carry out works to protect the beach but any work we do, because of its special status, must adhere to the EU Habitats Directive and must be sanctioned by the National Parks and Wildlife Services. So, we agreed to undertake a special study to identify the erosion processes taking place,” Mr Walsh explained.
He said his offices have now invited tenders from consultants who specialise in coastal erosion and these were awaited.
