Mayo woman, Aoife Sweeney has been selected to dance as part of a performing arts group at this year’s Olympic games in London on July 27.
Aoife, a native of Balloor, Castlebar, is a Senior Occupational Therapist at East London NHS Foundation Trust. Aoife was picked by her employers, to perform at the opening ceremony in London this month which will be directed by oscar-winning director Danny Boyle.
Speaking to The Mayo News, Aoife’s proud sister Mairéad relayed Aoife’s excitement about performing at the biggest sporting event in the world.
“She’s really looking forward to performing at the opening of the games. She has been practising pretty much every weekend for the last few months. It’s pretty intense.”
“Aoife wouldn’t have always been a dancer but she got together with work colleagues and tried out for the chance to perform before millions of people.” In relation to the performance itself Mairead is staying tight-lipped. “It’s going to be a big surprise segment.”
Watching their daughter from Balloor, on July 27 will be JJ and Kathleen Sweeney, who not surprisingly ‘couldn’t be more proud’.
