TOWN Clerk for Westport, Ann Moore, confirmed at last week’s meeting of Westport Town Council that plans to install a CCTV system in the town were progressing and may be in place before the end of the year.
Cllr Christy Hyland asked at last week’s meeting if progress was been made in relation to the provision of CCTV in town. €20,000 had been set aside by the councillors in the 2012 budget and people in the town were wondering if the system was ever going to be put in place.
Ms Moore said the item had already been placed on the agenda for the next meeting of the Joint Policing Committee where members of the Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce and the Gardaí would be updated on the project.
To date, the committee had identified priority areas for the placing of cameras and now the technology used had to be agreed on. The council had to then seek permission from property owners for the erection of the cameras in question.
Cllr Hyland enquired as to when the project might be operational and Ms Moore said there were a number of statutory processes that had to gone through to meet legal obligations but these would expedited as quickly as possible.
