AN updated map of Westport, specially designed for tourists coming to the area, has been launched by Westport Tourism Organisation. It is one of several pieces of promotional and informational literature provided by the organisation for visitors over the past 20 or so years.
The new updated map, currently available at the Fáilte Ireland offices at James Street and several other places of accommodation in the town, includes a street plan for Westport Town and Harbour area, including Westport House, the Great Western Greenway and the Clew Bay Heritage Centre.
The map, which has had an initial print run of 25,000 copies, is available to all tourist accommodation and service providers in the area. It includes the names of all hotels, several guest houses and B&B’s, self catering establishments, caravan and camping parks, activities, various restaurants and food-outlets, specialised shopping, health and beauty salons, taxis and a range of other services.
Chairperson of Westport Tourism Organisation, Ms Catherine O’Grady-Powers said the Westport map was probably the most popular piece of literature for tourists ever produced by Westport Tourism Organisation.
“In the various professional surveys undertaken over the years by WTO, the need for information for visitors was always highlighted. Our map has been going for several years and has now been updated for 2012 and 2013. As soon as our visitors go through the details on the map they feel a great affinity with the town and area. Its value to the development of tourism over the years is almost unquantifiable” she said.
Westport Tourism Organisation also has a very sophisticated website, as well as a much used tourist information kiosk at Wesport Quay, the first of its kind in Ireland.
