Man on stag jailed for hitting Westport bouncer

A Dunmore man was sentenced to 28 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to assaulting the Head of Security at the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport whilst on a stag party in the town.
Martin Donnellan (20) of Beaugh, Dunmore, Co Galway appeared in Westport District Court charged with assaulting Matt Rowley on September 18 last. He was also charged with two public order charges.
Garda Declan Glynn told the court that Donnellan had been evicted from the C2 nightclub when he tried to stop bouncers removing a colleague of his for being drunk. Whilst bouncers tried to remove Donnellan, he struck Mr Rowley above his left eye before being held by security staff until Gardaí arrived.
Garda Glynn told the court that Donnellan was very aggressive towards the security staff when the garda arrived and that he was unsteady on his feet.
Judge Mary Devins convicted him and sentenced him to 28 days for assault and 28 days concurrent for threatening and abusive behaviour. He was fined €300 and directed to pay a further €500 to Matt Rowley. Expressing shock at the jail sentence, Donnellan signalled an intent to appeal the order.
