Mayo beauty queens make their mark

TIARAS and roses were aplenty last weekend as the Mayo representative for the 2011 Rose of Tralee festival was selected, while the new Miss Ireland was also crowned - Mayo’s last minute entrant to the pageant, Marie Hughes.
On Friday night in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Dervla Kenny from Ballyvary was crowned the 2012 Mayo Rose. She is a niece and Godchild of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. Dervla - who works as an Occupational Therapist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire - was sponsored by The Village Inn, Ballyvary.
Dervla was presented with a Newbridge Tiara sponsored by Rouse’s Jewellers, Ballina, and a bouquet of roses sponsored by Castlebar Florists. Dervla also received a hair and beauty makeover with a smashbox cosmetic hamper sponsored by Petal’s Hair and Beauty, Westport, a selection of Newbridge jewellery, an Elverys sports voucher, an Irish soccer jersey, a beauty hamper sponsored by Staunton’s Pharmacy, Castlebar and a Carlton Hotel voucher and spa treatment.
Dervla’s first official engagement came less than ten hours after her success, when she attended a Civic Reception for Mr. Giovanni Trapattoni, Manager of the Republic of Ireland soccer team, and Mr. John Delaney, Chief Executive of the FAI, hosted by the Cathaoirleach and members of Westport Town Council in The Plaza Hotel, Westport. Following this she embarked on a charity climb of Croagh Patrick with Mr. Trapattonni and her uncle, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
Dervla will represent Mayo in the regional finals of The Rose of Tralee competition in Portlaoise on the June bank holiday weekend.
Meanwhile on Saturday night in Dublin, 21-year-old Marie Hughes was crowned Miss Ireland  ahead of 33 other beauty queens from around the country. A latecomer to the competition, Marie only won her Miss Mayo title in Breaffy House Resort last week.
Marie will now represent Ireland at the Miss World contest in Inner Mongolia in August.
