A Fisherman from Erris is recovering in hospital in Sligo after undergoing an emergency operation on his leg after it became caught in the drive shaft of a shipping vessel.
The man in his twenties, who comes from Porturlin, was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital after the accident occurred on Friday morning while he was fishing ten miles west of Erris Head. An operation on the leg was performed on Saturday and it is understood that pins were inserted in the leg and the fisherman is recovering in hospital.
The RNLI lifeboat at Ballyglass were notified at 8.55am when the 50 foot trawler, the James Collins, sought assistance for a crew member who sustained leg injuries.
There were three crew members on board the vessel which fishes out of Porturlin harbour.
The injured man was working on the engine when the incident occurred and was taken from the trawler by the crew of the lifeboat before he was transferred onto the Coast Guard helicopter.
