HE has been tipped as the dauphin, a leader-in-waiting, but now after a romantic break in Rome, walking up the aisle may well have become more important than crossing the Dáil chamber. And for this loved-up Soldier of Destiny it wasn’t only the sun that was dancing on Easter Sunday morning as Dara Calleary (pictured) proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Siobhán Gready, in the historic city of Rome.
Of course, whether Pope Benedict waved his papal hand over the couple is top-secret but Deputy Calleary was happy to tell The Mayo News last night that he has already lured his fiancée into Fianna Fáil, the party that his family has represented in north Mayo now for three generations.
He confided too that Siobhán is a primary school teacher at Scoil Ursula in Sligo and has been friends with the former junior minister for a number of years.
While Deputy Calleary is no stranger to talking politics on both national radio and  television, he proved very coy when we asked him to describe the ring. But after some gentle persuasion and a quick verse by The Mayo News of Wet Wet Wet’s ‘Love is All Around,’ he conceded ‘it is very traditional … and, okay, yes it is a diamond.” Phoar!
