Man to stand trial for petrol-bomb attack on Garda station

A 25-year-old Castlebar man charged with an arson attack on a manned garda station last November will stand trial in May.
Mark Maughan appeared before last week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court where he was served with the Book of Evidence in connection with a petrol-bomb attack on Castlebar Garda Station on November 20, 2011.
Maughan of 14 Northbrook Avenue, Castlebar, is accused of entering the lobby of Castlebar Garda Station at 4.15am and throwing what is believed to be a petrol bomb towards two gardaí who were in the public office.
The station lobby was ‘engulfed in flames’. The Fire Service was called and two fire-brigade units arrived and quenched the fire. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with arson.
Detective Garda Edward McLoughlin told the court that he served the Book of Evidence on Mr Maughan who was returned for trial at the next sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court on May 1, 2012.
