The implementation of the Smarter Travel Programme and improving communication with Westport residents are Westport Town Council’s immediate challenges, according to the new Town Manager.
Martin Keating was welcomed as the new Westport Town Manager at last week’s monthly meeting. Outlining his immediate vision for the town, he said communication was more important than ever.
“It is vital that we communicate well with businesses, tourists and most importantly residents in the town. We will have to start thinking ahead and using new technologies, such as social media outlets, to get our messages across, particularly with Smarter Travel. The Smarter Travel Programme is the biggest project and challenge for us in the years ahead,” he said.
Mr Keating said the town faced challenges but that they were not without opportunity, and he said his is looking forward to a number of projects, such as the Town Hall and the new Council offices.
He also remembered his late wife, Mary, whose first anniversary occurs at this time. He said she was his biggest supporter, and he drew inspiration from her and thanked all who supported him in the last year.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Christy Hyland led the congratulations to Mr Keating on his promotion to Town Manager and said he was in no doubt he will rise to the challenge.
Mr Keating had been previously responsible for housing in Westport and he was praised for his achievements in this area. It was noted that he was also responsible for the town’s budget being in good health.
